My name is John F. I am 35 years old and I’ve abused drugs for 20 years. I was a hopeless drug addict who could not conceive ever being able to quit doing mind altering chemicals. I tried other means of quitting, but I just could never get that elusive physical sobriety. The longest length of time I was able to stay put together since I was 13 years old was 48 days straight. It has been a long and trying road until May 5, 2005. That was the day that I arrived here.

From the first day here that little voice that drove me to keep using vanished. I am currently in the Sauna part of my program and I have been in for 41 days. I have had 5 drug restimulations – 4 pot and 1 LSD. They were not easy to get through, but between the extremely professional staff and caring students, I was able to get through these uncomfortable ordeals. In having walked through these “restems”, I have come to a major conclusion – that I can’t stand the feeling of being altered in any way, shape or form. I like the person I am and I am proud of myself for accepting this new way of life! You see, we are one huge family here from the staff to all the students.

In the five other programs I have been exposed to, I was the victim and I was made to believe that I was powerless. Here at this program, we are taking responsibility for our past and our future. I would like to thank Vista Bay for giving me the chance to get my life back. I have never felt as good as I currently do.

When I first came to Vista Bay I was near death in all aspects; physically, mentally, and spiritually. I was barely existing at all. I had been living life by a double-edged sword. I had become physically dependent on alcohol and had to have it for my body to survive. Yet the alcohol was killing me. Then, my sister found this place and offered me treatment. I knew this was my last chance at life so I gladly accepted her offer. I am so grateful for my loving and supportive family.

I have been here for about 4 months and I feel absolutely awesome. I owe my life, my new way of living, thinking, and communicating to this program here at Vista Bay. Before I came to here I had lost all hope of ever being sober, successful or happy. I can't believe it has been a week since I first came to visit. I was quite impressed with the facility. Sending my young son to an unfamiliar place was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make in my life. Talking with the staff before hand and reading about the program online, I made the decision to send him. I came to visit after approximately three and a half weeks and was extremely impressed with what I saw. I could not believe how warm, comfort-ting, reassuring and positive I felt there. The staff and the students got along so well, that I could not tell the staff from the students. I liked the fact that everyone there knew what was expected of them and was doing course work, chores, ... without a second thought. I was invited to attend the graduation celebration that evening. Wow, did I love what I heard and saw. I was further inspired with the program components. I can hardly wait for my son to complete the upcoming books. I heard so many students discuss how they have never felt better in their lives than they do right now! I could see the changes in my son already. The other students were friendly and very positive in their outlook at life. They kept reaffirming how great my son is and the importance of education. I truly knew I had made the right decision to send my son here. In fact, I think it will be difficult for a student to leave such a program where you truly feel desired, wanted, respected, and valued! I can see why many chose to want to work here upon completion of the program. I was glad I came for a visit and know my son is in the right environment! I was a complete mess when I first arrived at Narconon. I had all but destroyed my body, my mind, my family, and my life. I had been a heroin addict for so long that I had come to believe that it was my only option in life. I was sick all the time, I was weak and unhappy and apathetic about my life.
Although, I had put my family through hell with my drug use, they had not yet given up on me. My parents gave me an opportunity to start living again by sending me to Narconon. I arrived on January 6, 2007. I came in strung out, with painful abscesses on my arms, not having slept for days, completely emotionally exhausted. I was scared at first, but I was willing to give anything a chance. I didn’t know what to expect, but as soon as I met some of the staff and other students I began to feel at ease. I could tell immediately that the staff at Narconon genuinely cares about the students in their program. I had spent so long in isolation that it was hard for me to open up to anyone, but they were really patient and understanding. I felt like they knew where I was coming from and didn’t judge me. They demonstrated compassion and caring that gave me hope. I saw a lot of changes in myself throughout my program, some gradual and some breakthroughs. I started sleeping at night and having energy throughout the day, I started eating healthy. I began to open up to people, form friendships, and trust people again. I no longer feel a need to hide from anyone or from my own emotions. I tried to get clean so many times before, but I never felt good. I always felt that I was suffering through my sobriety. Now I have gotten to a point where I truly enjoy life. I am eternally grateful for the second chance that I was given. I am happier than I have been in years.

Before Narconon I was lost, I was searching for so long to find who I was. I had reached a point where I had just about given up. After spending six and a half months in jail I had reached “my bottom”. I decided to try one last thing, I came to Narconon in Feb of 2007 and what I found was something spectacular!! I found a program that truly does work. Through the sauna I was able to cleanse my body from all of the drugs I put in it, and the rest of the program brought my mind to a world of possibilities, freedom, and all of the amazing things I lost sight of for so long!

Illicit drug and alcohol use is a staggering problem in today’s society. The annual Monitoring the
Future study (Johnston, O'Malley, Bachman, & Schulenberg, 2006b) estimates that 13 million
youths aged 12-17 become involved with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs annually. The
resulting costs to society include poor and disruptive academic performance; delayed or damaged
physical, cognitive, and emotional development, and a variety of other negative consequences. In
a study of tenth grade students, Hays and Ellickson (1996) showed strong links between alcohol
use and sociability, rebelliousness, and deviant behavior, including drug use other than alcohol.
For many youths, substance abuse precedes academic problems such as lower grades, higher
truancy, lower expectations, and drop out decisions. In fact, the more a student uses cigarettes,
alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs, the more likely they are to perform poorly in school,
drop out (Dewey, 1999; Ellickson, McGuigan, Adams, Bell, & Hays, 1996) or not continue on to
higher education (Johnston, O'Malley, & Bachman, 1999).
Animal studies suggest that teenage consumption of drugs and alcohol can alter normal brain
development and associated learning and memory (De Bellis et al., 2000; Hall & Solowij, 1998)
a dramatic impact that can occur with as little as two beers (Wuethrich, 2001). The same blood
alcohol content of 0.08 percent more greatly impairs learning in individuals under 20 years than
